Grab an old bath or beach towel and fold it to about 8 to 10 inch square. As you lift the wiper arm up, place folded square towel where the wiper arm connects to the wiper blade. Should the wiper blade or arm snaps back to the exterior windshield, the towel will deaden the blow and will usually prevent the windshield from cracking. Where as, without the towel it is not uncommon for the windshield to crack.
